The echoes of the performance of Bach St Matthew Passion continue! The church wardens and I wish to offer thanks to those who attended – in their hundreds, and sang two chorales with the choirs – and to the many people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes in the weeks and months leading up to this stunning production.
Along with Martin Neary, our Director of Music, with his formidable musicianship and experience, special mention goes to John West and the St Michael’s choir, and our parish administrator, Lizzie Hackett-Brown, who kept ticket sales and front-of-house running smoothly
Behind the scenes, a host of unnamed volunteers organised the music, liaised with the Barnes Music Festival, set up the seating plan, produced the programme, installed extra lighting, laid out numbered seats, chairs and staging, booked extra loos, prepared the community centre, stocked the bars, served the drinks, cleared up afterwards and left the church spotless. These time-consuming logistics were crucial to the evening. Our donors and guarantors ensured the funding was in place, for which we were most grateful.
I’m particularly pleased that the church was full and helped promote St Michael’s, in Barnes and beyond, as a place of beautiful music in the service of God.
